Everybody is amazed by the fast pace at which computing power grows (it doubles every 1.5 years). But only few people are realizing that communication bandwidth is growing at twice that rate. Around my 40th birthday in mid-2002, I realized that during my lifetime significant developments have taken place. Things that most people in indistrialized countries nowadays take for granted at really low cost were only at the edge of being possible a relatively short time ago.
